Why is PREVENTION so important for kids?

Teens are more likely to make healthy choices when parents talk early and often.

Access at home is a common first step to misuse—lock up medications, vapes, and alcohol.

Most Meriden teens are not using substances—positive norms matter more than you think.

Set clear expectations about substance use—teens want boundaries, even if they act uninterested.

Social media influences youth behaviors—stay involved and talk about what they’re seeing online.

Be a role model—teens notice how adults handle stress, celebrations, and peer pressure.

Your involvement makes a big difference.

Being involved doesn’t mean doing it all. Check in with your teen, show up when you can, and stay informed. Even the small stuff—like asking how their day was—adds up. Education empowers positive change.
