Once is all it takes to get addicted or OD!

Opioids and prescription meds like ADHD drugs might seem safer than street drugs, but they’re not when the prescription isn’t yours. Fentanyl is showing up everywhere, making any unprescribed medication potentially deadly. The effects don’t just impact you—they can devastate your family and friends too.
Let’s be real about opioids so you can make informed decisions.

Just the facts: Opioids + meds

Opioids don’t just kill pain—they mess with your brain’s reward system. That “good” feeling fades fast, and your brain starts begging for more, even when you don’t want it.
Some pills sold online or shared between friends are fake and laced with fentanyl. Just one tiny grain can stop your heart. You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You don’t get a second chance.
Some people get hooked after just a pill or two. Once your body wants it, quitting gets really hard, and it can control your whole life.

Our survey results* help us guide our approach.

In April 2025, students in Meriden Public Schools grades 6–12 participated in the Youth Voices Count Survey* on youth lifestyles, substance use, mental health, related risk and protective factors. THE OVERALL RESPONSE RATE WAS 79%.

The pressure to use pills is real. Here’s how to handle it.

Keep it simple:

Just say, “I’ll pass” or “That’s not for me,” without over-explaining.

Use humor:

Say “A doctor didn’t order that for me,” or “I’m allergic to fake prescriptions.”

Walk away:

Have go-to activities ready when stress hits.

Own your decision:

Be direct: “That’s not happening” and move on. Confidence shows you’re serious.

Be honest about risks:

Say “I’m not risking my future for a pill” or “I’ve seen what that does.”

Blame consequences:

“My parents would kill me” or “I can’t afford to get caught with that stuff.”

It’s your health—make informed decisions.

Understanding prescription drugs and opioids helps you make smart decisions about your health and safety. Even legal medications can be dangerous when misused. Know the facts, ask questions, and always follow medical guidance to protect yourself and your future.
